My New Life Begins

My first car ride was very strange. I had never felt anything so soft and yet so bouncy. Things were moving past me very fast. And where were all the other dogs?

The new lady kept telling me i was a very good girl, but I wasn’t sure how or why or what was happening…

Finally we came to a stop. The moment I stepped out of the car, I was surrounded by new smells. The new lady walked me through a gate, and into a small fenced area. There was a large water dish with a waterfall and plants growing in it, and more green growing things than I’d ever seen before.

I went up some rock steps to a grassy area. I could tell other dogs had been here before, and knew just what to do.

Finally I followed the lady into the strangest kennel I’d ever seen. It didn’t look like any building I’d been in before. It didn’t smell like a kennel. There were no other dogs, and everywhere I walked there were soft things under my paws.

Slowly but deliberately, I explored every room. The smell of another dog (or maybe dogs?) was everywhere, especially on these thick flat large pillow things that were here and there around the house, but try as I might, I could not find these other dogs.

I walked over to what looked like a giant doorway, but strangely, my nose pressed up against something, and I could not go through it. But oh, so much to see out there… what was this strange, invisible thing I could see through but not walk through?

And there were plants to eat (I tried one, which made the lady giggle and say “no,” and she took the plant away)… and soft plushy things to chew on… and a ball!! I remembered balls from when I was much younger, I had not seen one in so long…

Finally I laid down. The new lady came over and touched me very gently. She said she was my mom, and this was my home, forever. I wasn’t sure what that meant, but when I looked into her eyes, I saw something I’d never seen before, and I put my paw on her arm.
